About Oliver Le, L.E.A.D. Research Fellow
Oliver Le is an aspiring Physician, studying Medical & Molecular Microbiology at UC Davis, focused on advancing healthcare access, disease prevention, and equitable health systems. His background includes sophisticated research and clinical exposure at prestigious international and domestic institutions.
As a L.E.A.D. Fellow, Oliver is developing a community healthcare research initiative in Lubao, Philippines. This project involves deploying a Mobile Digital Health Screening Unit (MDHSU) to deliver preventive care and digital follow-up for rural residents, specifically aimed at improving hypertension follow-up attendance.
Through the Miap Med Program, he shadowed neurosurgery rounds at Wellstar Health, Medical College of Georgia, observing complex procedures and analyzing clinical case studies. His scientific experience is further solidified by genetics studies at Cambridge University and nanoscience research at the UCLA Nanoscale Microscopy Lab.
About My Research:
Improving Health Outcomes via Direct Community Healthcare Services
Hypothesis
The Impact of Mobile Health Screening Units (MHSU) on Hypertension Risk Literacy among Residents of Lubao: Prospective Quasi-Experimental Pre-test/Post-test Design.
We are testing whether the Intervention (MHSU screening and education) produces a significant increase in literacy compared to the Baseline Community Health Literacy. Null Hypothesis The mean difference between pre-test and post-test accuracy scores is zero; the MHSU has no measurable effect on literacy.
Outcomes
- Mobile Health Screening Unit (MHSU): The project aims to achieve a statistically significant increase in hypertension risk-level awareness and literacy among adult residents of Lubao. Through clinical screenings and educational feedback, the MHSU seeks to improve participants’ accuracy in identifying their own blood pressure risk category.
- Healthcare (Clinical & Prevention): Demonstrate the efficacy of a mobile outreach model for improving the early detection of chronic cardiovascular and metabolic risks in rural residents of Lubao and increase participant adherence to clinical pathways through immediate referral to local clinics.
- Legislative & Government (Policy Application): Provide validated, evidence-based data (p < 0.05) to local government agencies, establishing a cost-effective community health screening model that can be adopted in other rural barangays and provinces.
- Education & Social (Literacy & Community): Establish a replicable, culturally competent curriculum and platform for health education by utilizing local language brochures and standardized counseling, directly addressing health literacy disparities.
- Economics (Cost Reduction): Reduce the long-term economic burden on families and the local healthcare system by shifting care from expensive late-stage intervention to affordable, early-stage risk detection and prevention.
